Playful Otters

The two otters came from a picture off the internet. They are one of the animals I most admire and the piece was carved on a walnut blank with the end grain showing. This blankwas chosen because I wanted the bark still on the outside as a frame. It is a feat I will never reproduce, as the difficulties this caused by carving on the end grain was endless, with pieces breaking off left, right and centre. I had chosen walnut because I thought it would mirror the otter’s coat colour, but to top it off, once I polished the piece it all went very dark. After various attempts to lightening it up, I marked this one off to experience.

My thanks goes to Mellissa from Animals R Forever for allowing me to use the original photo which inspired this piece
