Mr Elephant

While my daughter was doing her GCSE’s in sewing and embroidery at school. She needed to do a banner for her continual assessment exam and chose to do a Sri Lankan Elephant in full ceremonial dress with brahman script lettering around the outside. She did a fantastic job but needed a pole to hang the banner on and ask dad to carve 2 elephants to go on the ends.

They were only about 4” in length and made out of ordinary pine, stained in dark oak. The tusks were made out of a galvanised nail and bent for effect. They were naively made but had the desired effect. Once the exams were finished the banner came back and one of the elephants hadn’t survived the trip. I kept this one as a reminder of her success in her exams as a dad’s keepsake.
