Mother Love
Who can resist a tearful child who needs their mum when things aren’t going well. When I saw this picture on Pinterest, I knew it could work as a shallow relief. It took some time to get the angles just right, but with the addition of a bit of pyrography, the final image works. It reminded me of my son when he had fallen as a toddler(what a noise).
The piece is carved out of lime and the mother has been lightly stained with tea to darken her skin and make the child stand out. His tears are glue, which works quite well. I have polished the finished piece with beeswax as I only wanted a satin finish to it. This is one of my wife’s favourite pieces and is the only one to adorn our front room. I will have to try harder!
