Molly the Springer

My son and his girlfriend were looking during the run-up to the 2nd Christmas of lockdown to get a puppy, but due to cost, work commitments and availability then decided to wait. I decided that they could have a dog and I carved Molly out of Holly and a piece of Mahogany. Molly causes a lot less fuss in caring, cleaning and food, plus doesn’t require the walks a standard puppy would, but I would agree she’s a lot less fun as well.

I took the 2 pieces of mahogany and shaped them to join with the holly in the middle to get the white hair on either side of the liver colour and then shaped it into the springers face. The tongue is a piece of pink marquetry veneer and the eyes are 2 beads painted. How did Molly get her name?… named after the 2 kinds of wood used, Holly and mahogany together of cause. If I’d used it the other way then it might have been Hohogmany which is a stupid dogs name and as they live in Scotland, sound a bit like the New year celebrations.

The base is a piece of polished beech.
