Magic Card Box
I am guilty as charged for getting my kids interested in the world of fantastical creatures, gaming in Warcraft, dungeons and dragons and all things “fanciful”. Hobbits, goblins and Ents are all friends in our house because we do believe in fairies, we do, we do.
I had been involved in the first wave of D and D as a teenager and had bought a HeroQuest game as they grew up having great adventures with both him and my daughter. All the figures were hand-painted in gruesome ways to add effect and added to the enjoyment we got out of the game. I have to admit privately that I was a hard taskmaster, but it made for an interesting game and he has gotten his own back since. He now owns the game as I’m a little long in the tooth and have trouble keeping up with all the rules.
One Christmas he asked if I could make him a box to store his Magic cards in, and I dutifully obliged. Magic: The Gathering is a collectable and digital collectable card game created by Richard Garfield. Released in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast, Magic was the first trading card game and has approximately thirty-five million players as of December 2018, and over twenty billion Magic cards produced in the period from 2008 to 2016, during which time it grew in popularity.
The box itself is made out of oak and has marquetry on the top and my first attempt at inlaying brass rod into the side of a project. The symbols on the top and side are element categories in the game which are attributed to the creatures within the cards.
I was happy with the result as I believe he was too.
