Little Kingfisher

Back again, I just can’t stop doing something with kingfishers!! This fella was inspired by a design by Bill Prickett and published on the Woodcarving Magazine website. well worth a look as they have lots of projects to scan through. He is carved out of Yew with a walnut beak and placed on a walnut and beech base. It’s a mock-up for a larger carving I’m planning to do out of a cherry log when it seasons and the weather gets warmer. I’m expanding into bigger carving and donating them to charities.

My original idea was to colour him with his full iridescent blues and greens and leave the breast naturally orange, but I’ve changed my mind on completion. I used the Beech base and bleached it but making sure I kept the wood rings visible to act as a ripple in the water. The embankment is cit out of a piece of burr walnut and the reeds (which are totally out of scale) are made from toothpicks and walnut shavings. the base is finished in an acrylic spray to give the glassy watery finish and the Kingfisher in a light coating of beeswax.

This one has made it onto the mantle piece for now.
