Lest we Forget

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them!

The British Woodcarving Association, of which I am a member, has a WW2 remembrance display which tours the country. A pub in my home town called the Moby Grape has a great reputation for supporting help for heroes and other such causes.

After talking to the landlady and attending a remembrance service one year, I was drawn to creating my own homage to our fallen in both world wars. This one is dedicated to the soldiers of the first world war. The piece is created on a spalted round of birch and I’ve used the existing grain to highlight the background with ink stains to get the vibrancy of the sunset. The soldier is carved out of walnut and the ground is juniper bark.

I have a plan to do a carving to pay homage to the 2nd world war and maybe to my dad who was in the navy. He was a chief petty officer and sailed on the Warspite, Sutherland, and a variety of minesweepers. From the number of times, we watch the film “The Battle of the River Plate” I believe he was there at the end of the incident with the Graf Spee. He never spoke much of his experiences in the war, and we now have lost the opportunity.
