Kraken
The Kraken is a mythical beast said to be the scourge of sailors. I originally came across the idea after reading a Norse mythology book, but I recognise the Kraken has broader appeal than the Norse fables. I have always been interested in Celtic art, and the intertwining of the tentacles was a test at the time of my patience and current skills. It took about 15 months to complete with occasional breakages and reworkings. I was slight bald by the end of the process. The piece was carved out of a sycamore turning round. At the end, I was left in a dilemma? Was better to leave the Kraken unpainted or not? I left it for a few months allowing me to decide if it was best left or would it benefit from adding colour. I eventually painted the Kraken with enamel paints to give it the vibrancy I wanted. The picture it is based on is displayed on the internet by an artist called Verreaux. I am trying to get permission to use the original photo for comparison. ( This piece would not be available for reproduction)
